The term “orthopaedics” (or “orthopedics” in contemporary usage) is rooted in the Greek words ortho (straight) and pais (child). Early orthopedic medicine focused on treating children with spine, limb and other bone-related birth abnormalities. Today, the specialty has evolved significantly to encompass treating patients of all ages for a wide variety of injuries and conditions. The orthopedic surgeon has become the primary care physician of the musculoskeletal system.
