Roosevelt General Hospital partners with Meals on Wheels to provide meals to homebound seniors

PORTALES, NM, May 31, 2023- Roosevelt General Hospital (RGH) joins Meals on Wheels of Roosevelt County to offer nutritious meals to homebound seniors. The Meals on Wheels board asked RGH if they would be willing to take over crafting meals at the beginning of this month. Employees from dietary services at RGH were honored to take part in the program. Prior to partnering with RGH, the Meals on Wheels program was being offered through Heartland Continuing Care.

“We saw the need of our homebound seniors to receive meals through the Meals on Wheels program and we were able to step in and make a difference,” stated Michael Villanueva, manager of dietary services at RGH. Villanueva mentioned the recipients would receive the same fresh and nutritious meals served to patients. A typical meal consists of a protein, starch and a vegetable. Dietary restrictions are considered for each client when meal planning to ensure the food is nutritious and appropriate.

The co-partnership between Meals on Wheels and Roosevelt General Hospital began early this month. The feedback RGH has received from the recipients has been very positive. “They seem to be enjoying the variety of food options we are serving,” said Villanueva.

“In just one month, we have been able to provide about 300 meals to seniors living in Roosevelt County,” exclaimed Jeanette Orrantia, director of marketing and public relations at RGH. “This partnership aligns with the hospital’s goal to serve the community. We are happy to be a part of it.”

Meals are picked up by volunteers at RGH Café and delivered to seniors who may not be able to leave their home. Orrantia noted, “We know they are getting a healthy and delicious meal which makes the extra work gratifying.” RGH plans to continue providing meals for Meals on Wheels.
